Payne (ペイン, alt. Pain) is the top player in NewWorld Online and a supporting character in the BOFURI series. He is the guild master of the Congregation of the Holy Swords guild[1] and ranked first in the 1st event.[2]
Appearance[]
He is an adult male with blue eyes and medium-length smooth blond hair. His body is slim but muscular, and he looks good too. He gives off the image of a holy knight. His characteristics and appearance make him look more like a protagonist than Maple.[1]
Personality[]
Payne is an upright person. He is friendly, as he is seen grouping with Maple and other players during the 6th event without complaint. Because he aims to be the best, he's very competitive and challenged Maple Tree during the 4th event.
Either consciously or unconsciously, Payne's favorite pose is to turn his back on the camera.
Plot[]
Introductory Arc[]
Payne ranked first among the competitors during the 1st event.[2][3]
Guild Founding Arc[]
Shortly after the 4th event was announced, the Congregation of the Holy Swords held a meeting to discuss the upcoming event. Payne expressed his caution about the unknown and sent Frederica to gather intelligence about Maple Tree.[4]
Guild Competition Arc[]
Payne, Dred, Drag, Frederica, and 15 other members from the Congregation of the Holy Swords worked together to attack Maple Tree because they believed its guild members had exhausted all their powerful skills.[5]
Payne took the heavy job of fighting Maple head-on while the others distracted the remaining members of Maple Tree. After Frederica transferred the boosts from the high-end skills of Dred and Drag, Payne used high-end piercing skills to slay Maple without the delays that come after using heavy skills. Kanade and Iz's attempt to save Maple allowed Payne to trounce them. After Maple was brought to 1 health and used counter, she unleashed [Atrocity] and swiftly defeated Payne.[5]
During the chaotic battle at the Kingdom of the Flame Emperor, the Congregation of the Holy Swords planned to take advantage of Maple, who had gained the aggro of players assaulting the Kingdom of the Flame Emperor. Their ambush was thwarted as Maple swiftly used [Atrocity] and was multiplied to 7 with Kanade and Sally's [Phantom World!].[6]
Payne was friends listed by Maple after the guild competition event and attended the Maple Tree after-party.[7]
Rulership Arc[]
One time while participating in the 6th event, Payne was fighting alone until he encountered Maple. As a team that could be called the elite corps, Maple and Payne powered through the jungle while relying on the information Payne had gathered. They easily crushed treants, bees, and the queen bee.[8] After traveling to their destination, they encountered what appeared to be a humanoid wood druid. With Maple's [Loving Sacrifice] up, Payne was able to attack while only dodging piercing attacks and quickly defeating the boss.[9]
Maple left after defeating the druid, and two pairs of people arrived to challenge the boss, Chrome and Misery, and Kanade and Marx. After being asked to work together, Payne aided the four before they headed to their next destination.[9]
The five travelled to the ruins, where many golems appeared. They were failing to make good progress until Mii appeared and joined them. Mii and Marx worked together to hide them from enemies, and they swiftly entered the ruins. The ruins were a memory puzzle, and Kanade's perfect memory allowed them to skip the difficulty and quickly reach the skeleton king. Using their skills and abilities, they easily defeated the skeleton king boss.[9]
Eighth Event Arc[]
During the preliminary round of the eighth event, he was spotted by Mii and forced into battle by her. He ended up revealing what his partner could do but the battle was called off because of Maple's antics.
During the main event, he was separated from the others but partnered up with Dred. Together they found Sally, Frederica, Yui, Kanade and Drag. They also formed the three guild alliance. He then joined Kanade, Iz and Misery to take down a boss rush of sorts against knights wielding various weapons in a mansion on a sky island. They ended up facing a Tablet Summoner boss using the powers they didn't go through and took it down. On the third day, the three guilds took down Cthulhu together.

Trivia[]
- There are three major theories on how Payne has a "Survive at 1 HP" last stand skill:
- He is a Greatshielder who fights primarily with a Sword.
- The most obvious piece of evidence is that Stout Guardian is described as a Greatshielder exclusive skill.
- In the Web Novel it is stated during the Fourth Event that he blocked one of Maple's Atrocity/Savagery arms using his shield. The anime omits this particular piece of weaponry entirely. However, it is mentioned in Chapter 1 of the Light Novel that other shields can be wielded by classes besides just Greatshielders, so this could just also be a regular shield.
- During Order of Holy Swords' attack on Maple Tree during the Fourth Event in the Web Novel, Payne quietly murmurs to himself, “Not just me… but Maple too...” after witnessing Maple's Stout Guardian triggering[5].
- The Anime also explicitly notes that Payne used Stout Guardian against Maple's Counter.
- In the Ninth Floor's Event Chrome, a known Greatshielder, is noted to "wield" a sword that looks identical to Payne's that Iz had crafted for him[12]. It is however, also possible that he merely had it held in his grasp, much like how Sally and Maple could collect rewarded weapons from the Second Event without actually being able to draw out their power.
- He acquired the skill from a Medal trade in.
- It is never made quite clear if Medal trade ins allow you to obtain exclusive skills from other classes. This doesn't prove or disprove the theory either way.
- Maple is able to use a skill such as Acid Rain, which is probably a caster class skill.
- It is a continuity error that was removed in the Light Novel.
- The Greatshielder default starting gear is a Greatshield and a Short Sword[1]. In the Light Novel, it is mentioned that Greatshields cannot be wielded by any other class and implied that Short Swords are the only weapons they can use in terms of weaponry.
- In the Light Novel, the term 'Exclusive' is dropped from Stout Guardian's description, only mentioning that it was a Greatshielder skill. This opens the possibility that there are equivalently named and handled skills for other classes.
- The light novel does not confirm if a skill was used, only that he survived with a single hitpoint.
- Light Novels are generally more polished than the original Web Novels.
- The sole detractor from this is that the Web Novel and Anime both agree that the skill was Stout Guardian.
- He is a Greatshielder who fights primarily with a Sword.
