The monster companions are passive, tamable critters in NewWorld Online, which are extremely rare. They first appeared during the 2nd event. Although this event marked their first appearance in-game, they weren't fully accessible to players until the seventh layer was released so that they would become commonly available to everyone.
When a player acquires a monster companion, they gain a ring accessory called the [Bridge of Bonds]. Any time this companion would die, they are instead transported inside their ring to recover and cannot be awakened for a day later.[1]
When the seventh layer was released, [Bridge of Bonds] were restricted so players could only have one for their first companion. Other tamed monsters must be kept in the real world and likely die completely when killed.[2]
Classification[]
Mythical Beast[]
So far, the are only four existences of Mythical Beast eggs that are seen. They were items that could be acquired during the second event. Extremely powerful bosses guarded the eggs, which were believed to be impossible to defeat, and was out of most of the players' league to fight. There were no given clues that would reveal information on how to hatch the eggs, that even the developers believed it would be physically impossible for players to acquire and hatch the eggs.
The avian boss Silverwing guarded the fox and turtle Mythical Beast eggs before it was defeated by the efforts of Maple and Sally. Maple chose the egg with green colors and hexagon-shaped outlines. Sally took the the remaining egg, which had a faint violet color. In the anime, the fox's egg is purely white, which is wrapped in a shimenawa, which colored white and red.[3] After a period of incubation, both eggs burst open to reveal a monster critter. Maple's egg hatched to reveal a turtle, which she named Syrup. The reason why Maple decided to name the monster Syrup is because she thinks she can combine its name with hers, which becomes Maple Syrup.
Sally's egg later hatched into a white fox, with a shimenawa wrapped on its neck. She named the fox critter Oboro. In other sources, Oboro's fox fire is violet, as opposed to his fox fire in the anime which have hot colors, such as orange or yellow.[4]
The primary Sea Emperor, which was not seen in the anime, guarded the bird and wolf Mythical Beast eggs.[5]
Mii acquired a phoenix that she named Ignis. Although unspecified, the phoenix is often seen as a legendary or mythological creature. Keeping the 2nd events Sea Emperor in mind, Ignis is likely the bird egg that was being guarded. When Iz calls Maple to meet up and then asks for help, Maple mentions her promise to level with Mii. Since the materials Iz needed would be in dangerous areas, Mii felt it would be good experience and decided to help. When asked whether she wants to ride a demon or a floating turtle, Mii happily calls out her companion and shows off Ignis.[6]
Rare Beast[]
The first rare-tier monster companion seen in the series are the bears that the twins, Mai and Yui, acquired.[7] A player can acquire a bear by finding its lair, which is a cave, and defeating it in combat. In the case for the twins, they followed the bear onto the cave and defeated them with practically no effort, only one attack was enough to finish the bear. This bear monster theoretically had the [Megamorph] skill, which it presumably used before its battle with Mai and Yui.
This bear monster companion probably has a difficulty level for players, but the twins just bulldozed through the fight and acquired the monster companion easily, so it is unspecified how high the actual difficulty is. The bears' names are Tsukimi and Yukimi.
Kasumi acquired a rare-tier white snake critter that she named Haku. Although unspecified, the difficulty level to acquire this monster companion is higher than the bear critter. It was presumably obtainable through a quest that was added in an earlier layer, which was shown under Kasumi's history. Acquiring this companion requires combat, wisdom, and discovery experience. Even after entering the Fog Valley in a Faraway Land, it was still a challenge for Kasumi.[8]
Chrome acquired a rare-tier floating armor companion that he named Necro. Although unspecified, the companion is likely rare because the treasure map he used to acquire it is a rare drop from a dungeon the locations to check on the treasure were unlikely to have companion monsters. Chrome found several things he could sell at the places you check for treasure before finding Necro.[9]
Misery showed off Bell, her fluffy white cat, to Maple before the 8th event.[10] Because of Bells progression, Misery believes him to be both a late bloomer and rare. He has learned supportive passive effects and no active skills.[11]
Other[]
More common monster companions make their appearance in NewWorld Online, although almost all of the details about them are still obscure and undisclosed.
Kanade acquired a transparent mimic that he named Sou. Although unspecified, the monster companion can be acquired by completing a quest that anyone can get and defeat ones self which can probably be manipulated quite easily. A good memory makes its easier to get the quest.[12]
Iz acquired a color-changing spirit that she named Fay. Although unspecified, the monster companion can be acquired by completing a quest that anyone can get. The quest has one gather materials from the layer and craft items to earn the fairies favor.[13]
Frederica acquired a small yellow bird that she named Knots (ノーツ). She showed up to have a duel with Sally with the intention of showing off her companion but Sally was afraid she acquired a ghostly companion and killed her before she could call Knots out. After the duel, Frederica showed off Knots and teased Sally.
Customization[]
With the release of the seventh floor, which included a new system that makes it possible so that all players are able to obtain a monster companion, the ability to customize the critter's appearance, as well as its skills or effects, became available.
Shortly after the twins acquired their bear companions, Iz was curious on what Mai and Yui was going to name the bears, and how they want to customize them. The former named her bear Tsukimi (ツキミ), modifying the color of its fur to become glossy black, and customized his skill effects to make it glow green. Yui chose the name Yukimi (ユキミ) for her bear. She changed the color of its fur to white, which makes it look like a polar bear, and customized its skills to make it glow pink.[7]
Evolution[]
To evolve, a companion must visit a watering place made of stone outside the town of animals. The town can only be visited by using three key items on an altar at the ruins of a city.[14]
They key items are the gemstone found in a stream, the gemstone on the collar of a monster bird resembling Silverwing, and the gemstone that is the eye of a giant made of wind.[15]
After Maple and Sally brought back and showed off their companions changes, Maple Tree discussed companion evolution. Because Chrome had visited the place where they found the giant made of wind and never seen the giant, they assumed their might be a level and/or affection requirement.[16]

Trivia[]
- Syrup is most likely a reference to the Spirit Turtle, which represents longevity. Oboro is likely a reference to the Fox Spirit, which symbolizes mischief.
- Haku, Kasumi's white snake, is likely a mythical beast-tier monster companion. The level of difficulty required to obtain it is significantly higher than the bear. Its process of solo-ing is comparable to level of difficulty a group faces against a boss like Silverwing. It may also be related to Yamata
- The partners of the guild leaders are based on the Four Symbols in Chinese mythology, with Syrup representing the Black Tortoise, Ignis representing the Vermillion Bird, and Ray representing the Azure Dragon.
