Kasumi (カスミ) is a player of NewWorld Online, and a major character in BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.
Her in-game weapon is a katana. During the first event of the game, she ranked sixth in the top ten.
She had a rough encounter with Maple and Sally during the second event, later becoming friends with them during the time they spent in a dungeon, chained to each other.
Kasumi joined Maple Tree just shortly after it was founded, as per the request of Maple.
Appearance[]
Kasumi is a young woman with deep, dark eyes and long, flowing black hair with trim tips, styled quite similar to a Hime cut.
She is pretty tall considering the Japanese standard of height, being the tallest out of all the female members of Maple Tree and second only to Chrome in overall height.
Kasumi has a mature and curvy figure and is noted to have a big bust, which is concealed by her kimono.[1]
Unlike most avatars that follow a western or medieval fantasy theme, her avatar has a more eastern appearance, reminiscent of a samurai. A notable difference is that while she would seem to wear hakama at first glance, it's a skirt; with two openings to allow her legs freedom of movement.
She seems to be one of the older members of Maple Tree.
Personality[]
Kasumi has a calm and reserved demeanor. She is also quite friendly and approachable. Like Chrome and Iz, she acts like a parent or an elder sister, protecting the other guild members. Kasumi is also quite good with social interaction and communication.[1]
Her real-life hobbies and tastes are mainly seen in-game, choosing more eastern-oriented equipment than western ones and enjoying green tea, a famous tea in Asia.[1] Not to mention, she'd like the Japanese-oriented stuff as well.
When needed, Kasumi is cautious, intelligent, and competitive. Her usual amiable, pleasant, and friendly persona is displayed whenever she is out of battle and more frequently once she is accepted into Maple Tree.
Plot[]
During the 2nd event, upon recognizing one of them to have a gold medal, Kasumi meets Maple and Sally for the first time as an antagonist. After failing to escape from Sally and before their fight is concluded, Maple accidentally triggers the conditions for the three to be swallowed into a hidden dungeon together. Forced into a truce, they instantly became close as they explored the dungeon together toward the exit. In the anime, the dungeon provides them with three medals, unlike in the web novel, which provides them with only one medal, which Maple found. Exiting the dungeon, they go their separate ways, but not before adding each other to their friend lists.
Near the end of the 6th day, Kasumi finds Sally in a cave and waits with her for Maple's skills to reset. Afterward, Maple comes out and blockades the cave entrance with Hydra so they can safely wait out the last day having fun together.
Description[]
Evident in her choice of gear and costume, she is influenced by traditional Japanese motifs.
History[]
Kasumi goes on a spending spree on the 4th layer. As the layer has a more traditional Japanese feel, she enjoys burning all her funds and filling her room with countless antiques. This spending would eventually lead her to acquire Self-Devouring Bewitched Sword・Yukari.
Kasumi is the first player to max out their entry permit at level 9 (wooden tag from the 4th event).
In her quest for a Monster companion, Kasumi went to the 4th layer and searched for changes as she does with every update. At a tavern, she discovered a frog person who talked about a monster in the Fog Valley in a Faraway Land. After a short quest where she defeated small demons on the 4th layer, acquired a purple-white feather from birds with cloud-like wings on the 5th layer, and defeated a boss-rank undead, the headless knight, on the 6th layer, she returned to the frog-person and received a map on a slip of paper.[2]
The map led to a valley on the 7th layer she had explored before. Just as she gave up, she closed her eyes and looked down before opening them and finding herself in the Fog Valley in a Faraway Land. After a few seconds, she saw a giant white snake with glowing red eyes and couldn't move. With some troubleshooting and revisiting the frog-person, she determined the giant snake can only be dealt damage once, and being in its line of sight prohibits movement.[2]
Because she couldn't defeat the giant snake, she chose to search the region and found a snake nest. With her new skill, Mind's Eye, she found that even entering the snake nest was a significant challenge. She attacked the giant white snake between its' eyes and used some of Iz's bombs to shoot herself into the snake nest. Deeper inside, she arrived at a hot spring where a little white snake was. After climbing her body, the hot spring gushed and gave her a Bridge of Bonds ring.[2] She later named him Haku (ハク).
Abilities[]
Kasumi has high HP and utilizes some form of self-healing. However, she stated that she is less agile than Sally, who has allocated most of her skill points to AGI. She can also heal others.
Sword Skills[]
Here is the list of Kasumi's sword skills, which influence her in-game fighting style. In the anime, the "Swords" in the skills' names are pronounced as Tachi while the "of the" part of the skills' names are omitted.
- First of the Swords: Heat Haze (陽炎, Kagerō)[3]
- This skill presumably distorts an enemy's vision of Kasumi and boosts her speed for a while.
- Second of the Swords: Cutting Iron[4]
- This skill is strong enough to cut through extremely strong defenses.
- Third of the Swords: Lonely Moon (皓月, Kōgetsu, bright white moon)[3]
- A slash that travels in an arc may reference the moon's crescent shape in some of its phases.
- In the anime, this skill is renamed Third Tachi: Arc Moon.
- Fourth of the Swords: Whirlwind (旋風, alt. Senpu)
- Fifth of the Swords: Houshin[5]
- A skill with continuous stunning effect.
- Sixth of the Swords: Homura (炎, Blaze, flame)[6]
- Seventh of the Swords: Crush (破砕, Hasai, alt. Shatter)[7]
- A powerful downward slash ruptures the ground inside and out. It deals a heavy knockback. Later results in heavy damage to both parties' equipment. However, the enemy's equipment is affected more than the user's.
- The side effect of this skill is notably omitted from the anime adaptation.[8]
- Eighth of the Swords: Gale[9]
- High acceleration.
- Drawback: Lowers [STR] and [INT]
- Tenth of the Swords: Adamantine (alt. Vajra)[10]
- Lower the user's AGI and DEX, increasing their abnormal status resistance and reducing damage.
- Last of the Swords: Oborozuki (朧月, Hazy moon)[11]
- Enhances users' stats by unleashing twelve successive high-speed attacks with ferocity.
- Drawback: Halves the users' stats and makes other blade skills unusable for a fixed time.
- This skill is omitted from the anime adaptation, as opposed to being used by Kasumi against Shin as a last resort against his Sword of Destruction.[8]
- Origin of the Swords: Hollow (虚ろ, Utsuro, empty space)[12]
- The user's hair fades to white, and the color of their eyes turns scarlet. They receive great power for a short period in exchange for greatly reducing the durability of their equipment.
- The reduced durability drawback of this skill is not present in the anime adaptation, leading to the conclusion that Kasumi's armor is still intact, as opposed to what happened in the Web Novel.[8]
- In the anime, this skill is renamed Beginning Tachi: Void.
- Bewitched Sword: Purple (紫幻刀, Murasaki gento, Violet Phantom Sword)
- The user will be wearing bandaged armor, and the effect of it being used is it'll transform the user into a little kid for roughly 10 minutes.

- Flash (一閃)[16]: (note: teleport, teleport slash, or a fast charging slash)
Equipment[]
Her equipment includes Japanese clothing with a katana, a cherry-colored kimono, a purple hakama, and a katana.[17] When she draws Yukari, her clothes mystically transform. Her clothes become a traditional dark purple skirt with a light purple cloth above her chest. There are bindings around her arms, and the sword releases purple smoke.[18]

Etymology[]
- Her in-game name, Kasumi, can be written as 霞, which can be translated to "mist" or "haze". It can also come from 花 (ka), which means "flower, blossom" combined with 澄 (sumi), meaning "clear, pure".
- Her name may also come from kasumi no tachi, a sword Kata for two training partners from the Tenshin Shōde Katori Shintō-Ryu, which is fitting considering her fighting style.
Trivia[]
- Kasumi is the closest to being normal within Maple Tree, and she is most grounded because she doesn’t use any abnormal or odd schemes, unlike most of her guild members.[21]
