Maxing Defense and New Teams is the tenth episode of the second season of the BOFURI anime series.

Summary

On the event's second day, the Maple Tree members step outside in hopes of fetching more medals, but are surprised to see the dark overcast. Not only that, a fog of war blanked out all of their maps, and their communication functionality wasn't working either. For safety reasons, Chrome suggests they stick together for the day, but they're then teleported, and separated from each other by being spread across the game area.

Maple is teleported to a beachside area all by herself, while Sally is teleported to a forest area where she quickly defeats a pack of Flying Imps summoned by a Demon Summoner. Said summoner monster was defeated by Frederica, who assists Sally in defeating the remaining Flying Imps and a Four-Armed Demon with her companion Knots. Once the monsters were dealt with, Sally and Fredrica decided to team up with each other and, from the distance, see "signal flares" set off by Maple. They then head toward, the location where the flares were being set off.

At Maple's location, Maple tries to set off another flare, but is interrupted by a Four-Armed Demon that perishes when her flare move goes off. Maple then falls on top of Mii's companion Ignis, who Mii and two of her guildmates were riding on top of. On the beach, Mii warns Maple that the map area is gradually shrinking, eliminating anyone caught outside it. As a way of thanks, Maple accepts a marker card that Marx from Mii, who then rides off on Ignis.

Meanwhile, Iz and Marx are in a labyrinth dungeon where they use Clear's camouflage ability to avoid contact with a Robo Knight. Heading onward, they reach a giant door with twin sandfalls between it. Elsewhere, Chrome and Misery face off against a pack of Flying Imps and, using their Monster companions as support, lasting until Mii arrives, who uses Ignis' fire breath to defeat them. Mii then informs the two about Maple's situation. Chrome asks to accompany Mii and Misery, citing that he saw some players in dire need of help, and Mii accepts the proposal.

Returning to Iz and Marx, they create a mini fortress to fight against a mob of Robo Knights led by the area boss, the Robo King. Witnessing an explosion from far away, Mii's group heads toward Iz and Marx's location, where they regroup with them. They reveal that they each received a medal for defeating the boss.

Elsewhere, Kasumi and Shin were surrounded by numerous Masked Grubs that duplicate after slain. Shin then defeats all of the Masked Grubs, causing a giant Masked Grub to appear, and Kasumi defeats it with her sword skills. They then see Ignis flying in the distance and signal them to pick them up.

Inside a hollowed-out tree, Mai and Yui watch as Kanade and Drag deal with some Flying Imps until Sally, Fredrica, Payne, and Dred arrive. Because the Congregation of the Holy Swords, and Kingdom of the Flame Emperor, lost their bases, Sally suggests they form an alliance with Maple Tree so they make use of theirs. Maple was later informed about this and allows it.

Afterward, the newly formed alliance reach Maple's base, where they all reconfigure the place to accommodate the new players better. The Administrators who had planned on releasing the next wave of monsters that day saw that the Holy Sword and Flame Emperor groups had formed an alliance with Maple Tree. It was their plan to minimize the number of players who could win the event to a low count; however, the alliance between the three top guilds jeopardized their plans.

Back at the base, Marx sets up a projection that shows a detailed map of the base and its surroundings. Immediately, a swarm of Spider Rocks invade the base while setting off the traps on their way. Mii and Payne decide to deal with the wave of Spider Rocks and get magical buffs from Fredrica. However, after the two deal with the monsters, they're scolded by Fredrica for destroying Marx's camera. Because of this, it's decided that everyone split into groups to challenge other dungeons in hopes of securing more medals.

The groups are divided as follows: Dred, Marx, Yui, and Mai head east; Payne, Misery, Kanade, and Iz head west; Drag, Chrome, Shin, and Kasumi head south. Finally, Fredrica, Maple, Mii, and Sally head north, while the remaining members stay behind to protect the base from danger.

• The map is shrinking and taking out players who stay in the deleted areas. Similar to Almos Town vanishing during Palkia and Dialga's fight in Pokémon: the Rise of Darkrai.
